how can i give my child every chance to succeed? (posted 27/03/2009)

By promoting a powerful literacy environment at home.

Research shows that children who read independently at school and at home do better at school.

Like it or not, much of our education system is based on evaluating children through written tests and work assignments.  Results then lead to the allocation of places for further education and then work opportunities.   Reading competence is by far the most important single factor for success in tests.  It accounts for 40% of the difference between students.

Some Important Generalisations.
The greater the volume of reading done by students, the higher their reading proficiency and the more inclined they will be to read throughout their lives.

Students who read widely and frequently are high achievers.  Children who read rarely and narrowly are low achievers.  The top 10% of children who do well in test scores read for at least 60 minutes each day.

What you can do

1.

Listen to your child read.  Ask them what they visualise (see in their mind as they read).
Help them to make inferences and make predictions.  Why did this happen? How did they feel?  What do you think will happen next?  What did you enjoy about the story/book?

Yes you may have to read the book as well.

The conversation is as important as the reading.

2.

Does your child have a bedroom library?  At the least every home should have a library.

Go shopping, (Opp. shops are great for inexpensive pre-loved books).  Every bedroom should have a personal library.  There is nothing better than having your ‘own books’.  Always add to it.

Have a balance of fiction and non-fiction material.  There should be novels by good writers, interest magazines, comics, reference books, non-fiction (i.e. National Geographic), historical fiction books and the child’s own stories.  World knowledge is essential for doing well at school.

3.

Read to your young children, for ever longer periods – we need to build reading stamina.

Children love re-reading favourites.  Question and discuss.

Don’t underestimate what children can do and understand.  Too often we base our expectation on what we see children do rather than what they can learn to do.  Have high expectations.  Don’t talk in known ‘children’s talk’.  Use strong and a variety of vocabulary.  Use complex words and they will learn them. Having too low expectation is one of our biggest mistakes – they will learn what we share.  Yes you can say to a 6 year old, “That was good, you just made an inference”.

Take your child to a library and join them up.  The library staff will help choose appropriate books if needed.  You can start your ‘temporary’ library.

Don’t throw out books no longer needed, donate them to your child’s classroom.
Invest your time.
President Obama read to his children every night while on the campaign trail.  He knew how important it is.  If he can find the time, we can.

National Ride2School Day is coming up (POSTED 20/03/2009)

Put Wednesday 25 March into your diary as Werribee Primary School will be celebrating National Ride2School Day. Our students will be joining other students across Australia in walking, riding, skating and scooting to school. National Ride2School Day is a chance for our students to come together and be active on the way to and from school.

Many students live some distance from school. ‘Part way is OK’ is a means students can still have the opportunity to enjoy walking and riding to school. The concept of ‘Part Way is OK!’ aims to improve the level of student participation from nothing to something. On National Ride2School Day on Wednesday 25 March, parents/ guardians are encouraged to drop off and pick up children at Chirnside Park by 8:30am so that students who live further distances away can participate in some level of active travel. Parents can also drop students at a point closer to the school – whether it is at a friend’s house or at a corner where they meet a friend(s) – so that the student can travel the rest of the way to school by foot, bike or scooter

Thank you Jo-anne Wembridge

"There is a sticker for every child who comes to school in an active way. A special Ride to School t- shirt for two people who ride their bike to school" Meet Mrs Wembridge at Chirnside Park at 8:30

2009 national young leaders conference (POSTED 20/03/2009)

The WPS student leaders Jacinta, Merinda, Ashley, Jessica, Victoria, Tom, and Nikita along with Miss Trofin went to the 2009 National Young Leaders Day on Monday March 16th. Here’s what they had to say about the day.

We listened to interesting speakers (Catriona Rowntree, Mike Martin, The Premier John Brumby, Drew Ginn,  and Kirsty Murray) talk about their lives, about leadership, persistence, and how to be a positive  leader in a school. They made everyone in the crowd call, “We’re all leaders yes it’s true, we’re all leaders how about you?” We felt really confident doing this and that we could be good role models to other people.

Megan Dredge, the host for the day, introduced everyone and did an activity that made us think and reflect about our role in our school. After every speaker there was a movie clip that showed leadership skills and where they can be used.

The day was fun and interesting. We felt inspired and that we were really leaders in our school.

JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL (POSTED 18/09/2008)

On Tuesday the 9th of September Abbey Keogh and Shaun Chesterman went to a Junior School Council (JSC) Congress and Expo at eh Box Hill Town Hall. This is what they wrote about the day:

At the congress we had to find ways to do fundraising for our school. We participated in a congress which is what they do at parliament to decide ideas. The two ideas that put a motion for were to do with the environment and bullying. The ideas that we put to congress and voted for will be taken to parliament. Also, while at the expo we went to workshops and we got given fake coins for participating so that we could then use them to buy things and do fun things. We were able to get some good ideas about fundraising for JSC at school. We had an enjoyable and interesting day.

VALE TO MITCHELL HARROWER (POSTED 15/08/2008)

We began the week with the sad news of Mitchell Harrower’s death. Prior to coming to school Mitchell was diagnosed with Niemann Pick Type C disease. Despite his illness Mitchell made a significant impact on many of us at Werribee Primary School. He had an infectious laugh and a smile that lit up the room. His classmates have been writing some wonderful memories of this much loved little boy and the common themes throughout these messages are;

Mitchell had a great laugh and made other people laugh with him;

He shared his joy of music with all;
He was a good friend;
Mitchell made people feel happy.

My special memories of Mitchell include singing with him and getting a high 5! His perseverance and love of life was second to none. Mitchell you have made a difference and will be missed by us all.

Sincere condolences to Liat, Doug and Taylor from the community of Werribee Primary School.

 (Posted 15/08/2008)

Last week the grade 3/4 classes were involved in the 24 Game Maths Challenge.  Each grade participated in a class tournament.  It is a game that challenges children (and adults!) to think of different strategies to use to create the number 24.  Each group is given a card that has 4 single digits on it, next the children have to use all the numbers on the card and any of the 4 processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) to create the number 24.

The children who scored the most points in their group then played off against other children in their grade.  From this playoff 2 class champions resulted.  They were:

3/4 C
Sadhvi Goundar
Taylor Woodward

3/4G
Eden Namua
KC Cook

3/4I
Gardeer Alali
Tarlea Odgers

3/4S
Dylan Gilboy
Natalie Hendricksen

3/4M
Darcy Morgan
Jaya Abela

On Friday, a mini tournament was held and the 10 class champions played off to find 2 overall grade 3/4 champions.  These children’s names have been submitted to ‘The 24 Challenge Maths Tournament’ and hopefully they will be nominated to participate in the Western Region Tournament, where they will play against children from other schools.

Congratulations to Eden Namua and Darcy Morgan for becoming the overall winners of the 24 Challenge and best of luck!  And well done to all the grade 3/4 children that participated.

Helen Harris (Numeracy Coach)

Dear Parents, we will be running a Seasons Program early in term 2.  What is Seasons?  It is a peer support program for young people who have experienced the loss of a significant person in their lives.  This loss and change is essentially because of death or separation and divorce within the family unit.  The program is conducted over 10 sessions at the school, there is no cost involved for your child to attend.

An environment that nurtures:

  • Self-esteem, affirmation, trust, confidentiality, acceptance, hope and the uniqueness of each person.

The freedom to:

  • Express and acknowledge the range of grief and loss reactions that they may experience and ask their questions.

If you are interested in your child attending this program please fill out the slip below and return it to the school no later than 15th April.  If you have any questions please contact me through the school.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE (POSTED 07/12/2007)

Traditionally for our Christmas raffle we have had an out of uniform day and instead of handing in a gold coin we have asked families to donate items for our Christmas raffle. This year because we had some vouchers and various items left over from the fete recently, we will be using these as prizes. However, some families do like to make donations for our special events so if you would still like to send something in to go towards our raffle we would gratefully accept what you have to offer and make them up into gift packs. Please leave your donations at the Office.  Kim Tunstall   Parents & Friends Association

.

We have really appreciated the offers of help we have received so far.  Our biggest outstanding problem at the moment is the pickup and return of some items (including lighting) from Ballarat on the 7th and 14th December.  If anyone in the school community can assist with this and has an appropriate vehicle it would be much appreciated.  We of course will repay and fuel costs.  Thank you.
Mr. D

KIDS HOPE (POSTED 19/10/2007)

Kids Hope is now up and running at Werribee Primary School

Our local Uniting Church and Werribee Primary School are committed to building a long-term partnership to assist all students at Werribee Primary School.

As part of that commitment they have established the Kids Hope program, where mentors are trained to work one on one with students who may benefit from a positive adult relationship other than their parents, in helping them to develop in many facets of their learning and social growth.

11 lucky students were chosen by teachers from the Prep to 3/4 area. These students will work with their mentor for 1 hour per week on a program directed by the teacher. The program may include academics, self esteem building or generally having someone to talk to about school issues.

It is well documented the importance of positive human relationships with a caring adult in a child’s life cannot be overstated. It can be the essential building block for a healthy and positive development

We are very positive and hopeful that this program will continue for many years so a larger number of our children can have the benefit of this type of extra assistance to their learning.

If you want any further information concerning the program please call Michelle Grace 9741 2286.

KIDS FEST TIMES (POSTED 12/10/2007)

The production committee continues to organise and the cast continues to work hard practising this year’s show “KIDS FEST” at Werribee Primary School.

Last week the Drama Club and 1/2R performed at the Wyndham Arts Festival.  We had two shows and were very proud of our efforts.  It went fantastic and we want to thank everyone involved.

Our committee will be sending out letters soon looking for sponsorship for our production.  Anyone interested please contact the school.  We are also still looking for scaffolding to put up in our set and would appreciate any help with that.

Thank you to the parents who came to the Werribee Events Centre to watch us at the Wyndham Arts Festival.  We hope to see you all at Kids Fest in December.  Look out for us in this week’s addition of the Werribee Star. Thank you and we’ll keep you updated.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION (POSTED 31/8/2007)

A very big THANK YOU to the very small and hard working group of ladies that have put together this years Father's Day stall in a very short amount of time.

The stall crept up this year but with the fantastic effort and very large amount of time put in by a small group of ladies they have been able to shop, make, wrap and price some fantastic items.

I am sure the children have appreciated being able to purchase something for their fathers and I am just as sure on Sunday morning the Father's will appreciate all your efforts as well.

So once again THANK YOU to the ladies that have put in so many hours to make Father's Day special in 2007.

Allison McKinnis - Parents and Friends Association President.

Sports Reports from last week (Posted 17/08/2007)

Cricket – On Friday we played cricket against Westgrove.  The scores were Werribee 2/66, Westgrove 4/50.  Nick retired with a fantastic 30 runs.  The wickets were taken by Caitlyn, Daniel, Mar Nay and one run out by Daniel.

Volleyball – On Friday we played Volleyball B.  In the 1st heat we lost 17 to 21.
In the 2nd heat we lost 14 to 9.
The highlight was when a girl from Westgrove served and it hit the roof.  Even though we lost every heat we played better than last week.  GO WERRIBEE!

Rounders – On  a windy, windy day we played an indescribable game of Rounders A.

The many homeruns we scored had a groovy twist, and out team played 100 x better than 100%.

We are proud of our first win 21 to 6.  Keep it up Rounders A.  YOU ROCK!

Rounders B – On Friday the 10th of August rounders B went to Westgrove.  Although we lost we played an excellent game and had loads of fun.

The final score was 12 to 15.  Everyone showed great sportsmanship skills and we are looking forward to next week’s game.

GREAT JOB WERRIBEE!!!

Easter Bonnet Parade - Friday March 30th (POSTED 26/03/2007)

As a final fun event for term one we are having an Easter Bonnet Parade on March the 30th at 1:20.

We would like the children to make a bonnet decorated along the Easter theme, to wear in the parade with their classmates.  We would like this to be a fun and non competitive activity so don’t stress!  You may be able to use items from home to make a bonnet or purchase something from the $2 shop that they can wear on the day.

If you have a child in grades 3-6 who would like to join our parade, they are most welcome.

The parade will be incorporated into the final school assembly for term 1.

Children who do not wish to participate in the parade can wear a different cool hat to school for the day.

We are combining this event as a fund raiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal and would appreciate a gold coin donation if possible for this fantastic cause.

If you can make it to our parade we would love to see you there.

On Friday 10th November Werribee Primary School will be conducting a Roll-a-thon as part of the fundraising program.  The Roll-a-Thon theme is based on any object that rolls.  This means that students can take part by riding bicycles, skate boards, roller blades or scooters, roll a basketball or hoop around a designated course within the school ground.  All participants will be required to wear a helmet and additional protective equipment if owned.  It is expected that all students will participate.

It is asked that students seek either sponsorship or a donation for the total number of laps completed.  We would ask that students approach friends and family only rather than door knocking for sponsorship.  Each $5.00 raised by an individual will provide one ticket in a raffle draw for a prize (i.e. $20 = 4 tickets) in Junior, Middle and Upper school levels.  There will also be a Whole School Raffle using the same $5 system for a New Bike & helmet donated by G & D Cycles which is on display in the office foyer.  Prizes will also be awarded for the grades that raise the most money as at November 27th

The use of opinion data to monitor school performance is a very important step towards making our school the best it can possibly be.  In recent years, we have conducted annual and anonymous opinion surveys for staff, children and parents and use the information gained to drive school improvements.  On Monday, 71 randomly selected families received a parent opinion survey and we ask that these families return the completed surveys by Friday 25th August.  Students will receive a free SUPER DOOPER FROM THE CANTEEN.  Already, 58% of families have completed the survey and we look forward to receiving them all.  Thanks!

NETBALL LIGHTNING PREMIERS 2006 (UPDATE 17/08/2006 ORIGINAL POSTED 11/08/2006)

Congratulations to our Senior Girls Netball Team for being Runners Up in the Whitton Region for the VPSSA. The girls travelled to Niddrie and played two games of which they won the first against Our Lady of Nativity PS and won 23 to 16. This placed the team in the final for the Whitton Region where they played Kilara PS (Sunbury) and went down by one goal 15 to 14 in a very hard fought and windy game. The school is very proud of the team’s effort and sportsperson ship they displayed. A very big thank you to Mrs Robertson who managed the team with dedication. Thanks to the parents who travelled to the games and supported our students.

On the 21/07/06, the 5/6 netball girls, played in the Werribee District Lightning Premiership. The day was very challenging with about 8 rounds of play for each team. For us, it was a good time to practise our skills for when we play Derrimut Heath in the regional finals the following week. The girls played well and won every single game. The grand final against Manorvale Primary School was the best game of the day.  Last week, we played against Derrimut Heath PS and won 21-13.  P.S.  Well done to our coach Mrs. Robertson, who has taken us this far and hopefully all the way.

Morgan Mitchell and Brooke Gilboy

We ask you to support this event by helping your child select books to read.  A child’s life can be positively influenced by exposure to quality books.
In addition, all purchases will benefit our school library.

PARENT/CARER ROAD S A F E T Y INFORMATION SHEET (POSTED 12/05/2006)

Children and buses

Do your children use a bus to go to school?

Parents/Carers

• Allow plenty of time to travel to the bus stop safely.
• Go to the bus stop with a young child and always hold their hand. Older children should walk in groups if possible.
• If you decide to meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off.
• If your child has special needs, consult your school about making arrangements with the school bus operator.
• Teach your child how to be a safe bus passenger (remain in the seat, no bags in the aisle, don’t distract the driver).

As a Motorist . . .

• Be aware that flashing orange hazard lights will be fitted on the front and back of all school buses in Victoria.
The lights will flash when the bus doors open and for about 20 seconds when they close – slow down when approaching a bus – especially if it has flashing lights!
• Be extra careful when passing a stationary school bus. Excited children often forget the rules of the road and may dart out from behind or the front of a bus.
Give way to a bus that is indicating its intention to pull out onto the road.

Taking the First Step Into the Driver’s Seat (POSTED 05/05/2006)

Wyndham City Council in association with VicRoads is asking learner drivers and their parents/guardians to spare just 90 minutes to begin the process of becoming a better and safer driver.

VicRoads statistics indicate that Learner drivers hardly ever have crashes, yet young ‘P’ Plate drivers are 3 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in their first year of driving than at any other time.

The only way to be a safe and responsible driver is by gaining extensive on-road driving experience and this requires cooperation between a learner and their parent or supervising driver.

Eric Howard, VicRoads General Manager, Road Safety, says: "Supervising a learner driver fills most people with a mixture of concern and often frustration - especially when it is their own child. Keys Please provides learners and their parents/guardians or supervisors with practical strategies to form a positive partnership so that when a learner says “Keys Please”, their parents/guardians hand over the keys and not the excuses".

Equally important is ensuring that learner drivers have obtained extensive driving experience before they go for their licence.

Research now suggests that to minimise the high number of fatalities and serious crashes involving P-Plate drivers a learner should clock up at least 120 hours driving experience. And that experience should cover all conditions: wet, dry, day, night, country and city driving.

Gaining 120 hours experience may seem daunting, but it’s really only one hour per week over a two-year period.  That’s a round trip to sporting practice, plus a trip to the supermarket each week, or it could even be a trip to school and back.

Keys Please has been developed by VicRoads, in conjunction with the Victoria Police, Transport Accident Commission, Department of Education and Training, and Community Road Safety Councils.

All forums are run by trained facilitators, and attendance is free of charge.

The next Keys Please forum will be held at:

HELP NEEDED (POSTED 08/02/2008)

Werribee PS urgently requires parent helpers to assist with food preparation and serving in the CANTEEN

We do not have enough volunteers to open the canteen for regular lunch orders or recess & lunchtime sales.

Therefore, the Canteen will REMAIN CLOSED until parent helpers, willing to assist regularly are found.

The Canteen operates solely on a volunteer basis, providing a service to our children as well as much needed funds to help purchase school resources.

This year we are aiming to operate the canteen in a similar way to 2007. That is:

  • Monday:           Lunch Orders,  Recess & Lunchtime Sales

  • Wednesday:    Lunch Orders & Lunchtime sales

  • Friday:             Lunch Orders,  Recess & Lunchtime Sales

Canteen hours are 9:00am – 2:30pm on Mondays and Fridays & 1:20-2:10pm on Wednesdays.

Please consider the benefits of helping out regularly in the canteen, complete the slip (click here) and return it to the school office promptly. Food Safety Training will be available at no charge to regular volunteers. Feel free to come and see me if you have any queries.

Many thanks
Sue Osborne  - Acting Assistant Principal
