To promote a community awareness of local business and schools working together for the well-being and education of our children. Werribee Coles has selected Werribee Primary School to receive proceeds of gold coin donations to go towards buying books for our class libraries and for games and sports equipment. To raise the funds required we plan to have a sausage sizzle during the school holidays.
The sausage sizzle will take place at Coles Werribee on Thursday 9th and Saturday 11th July the following dates between 11am & 2pm
Werribee Primary School is delighted that Coles has selected our school to be one of the first community group to benefit from their fundraising events. We encourage all those connected with Werribee PS to support these events at Coles Werribee, where you will notice Werribee PS logos, banners and coin tins located at the sausage sizzle table

Ride 2 School day – Wednesday 10th June 2009 (POSTED 19/06/2009)
Congratulations to all the people who arrived at school in an active way last Wednesday. Although it was a wet, cold morning we still had many families who walked, rode or scooted to school. A majority of the grades had 30% of the children walking. Mrs Sheldon's grade had an outstanding effort of 71%. Huge effort!!!!
The next closest was Mrs Wembridge's grade with 52%. The grade 3/4 children are setting an excellent example of being fit and healthy to the rest of the school.

Swine Flu Update (POSTED 29/05/2009)
As parents would be aware there are currently a number of confirmed cases of H1N1 Influenza (Human Swine Flu) in Victoria. Appropriate measures are being taken in relation to these cases. Specific concerns from parents about Influenza H1N1 (Human Swine Flu) can be referred to any of the following:
· The Swine Influenza Hotline Tel. 180 2007
· Nurse-on-Call Tel. 1300 606 024 – for expert health information and advice (24 hours, 7 days)
· Your doctor (GP) – if you have an influenza-like illness (fever, cough and fatigue) and have travelled to Mexico or California, Arizona, New Mexico or Texas in the past seven days.
Families should continue with standard good general health hygiene practices, such as ensuring your children undertake regular hand washing and cover their nose and mouth if sneezing and coughing.
This practice is being reinforced with your children while at school.
If your children are unwell, you should seek medical attention and avoid public places and close contact with others.
Host Families Urgently Needed for Exchange Students (POSTED 15/05/2009)
A number of Exchange Students, boys and girls aged 15-18, are relying on volunteer host families to enable them to come to Australia to study and live during their half, one or two school semester stay here. Should you feel you and your family could afford to have an extra host brother or sister at mealtimes and have a spare bed, share room or own, for even 6-8 weeks, please contact Klaus Schumann on (03)97584279. You can make a friend for life with your Italian, German, Belgian, French, Dutch, Japanese or Brazilian student and their family. Hope to hear from you. Yours sincerely, Klaus Schumann WEP Community Coordinator

Please help the Bacon & Egg/Sausage Sizzle fundraiser at Mitre10 Werribee on Saturday 30th May 2009. (pOSTED 15/05/2009)
As mentioned in last week's newsletter we are raising money through fund raising activities to improve our grounds for our children, including items such as new play equipment and fitness stations.
We are looking for different fundraising opportunities that don’t require our families to put their hands in their pockets and give parents that may not be able to help during the week the opportunity to get involved and have some fun, meeting other parents.
Saturday 30th May we are having a fundraiser Bacon & Egg/Sausage Sizzle at Werribee Mitre10.
How can you help? Donate/Discount - Do you know a company that may be able to donate or provide a discount for bacon, eggs, bread, sausages, onion, cans of soft drink or bottled water?
We can give them free advertising in the Owl newsletter and put up signs advertising their support at Mitre10 on the day.
Volunteer – Come and have some fun and volunteer to help on the day – no experience or training is required. If you are able to help in anyway please contact Penny Hendricksen. Phone: 9742 3021 Email: penny.hendricksen@bigpond.com
Friday 15 May 2009 Active Kids are Healthy Kids! (POSTED 01/05/2009)
National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event held in Primary Schools around Australia on Friday 15 May 2009. Parents and carers are asked to walk their children all or part of the way to school. Those who can’t walk the whole way are asked to combine a walk with public transport or to park the car a good distance away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
The Walk to School program:
-
Encourages regular physical activity because active kids are healthy kids.
-
Helps reduce hazardous traffic congestion in and around schools, creating pedestrian-safe areas for children entering or leaving school.
-
Is a way parents, teachers, carers and students can help ease global warming as they reduce car‐dependency.
-
Teaches children healthy lifestyle habits from a young age as they learn that walking is the best form of exercise. It’s easy, free and almost anyone can do it at anytime. And these habits tend to last a lifetime.
On Friday 15 May 2009 National Walk Safely to School Day, Werribee Primary School will 'Host a Healthy Breakfast' for those families who arrive at school in an active way.
This will be held in Mrs Wembridge’s room - Room 12 from 8:15 – 8:45am.
Here are four good reasons why a Healthy Breakfast is good for you:
-
Promote a healthy diet in conjunction with regular physical activity.
-
Good nutrition is essential for good health and a good breakfast is vitally important to start the day well
-
Breakfast gets the metabolism going and helps prevent a slump in concentration during the late morning hours.
-
Studies also show that those who eat a healthy breakfast eat less junk food later in the day and have a lower intake of saturated fat and a higher intake of essential nutrients and dietary fibre for the whole day.
Please complete the form and return to Mrs Wembridge, if you will be walking to school and attending the Healthy Breakfast on Friday 15th May, 2009. Click here for form
